Overview
Dayara Bugyal is a high altitude meadow, popular as one of the best trekking destinations in Uttarakhand, India. Due to its well-defined trail and gradual ascent, the trek is an excellent choice for beginners and families with children. Starting from Raithal village, the trek takes 3 to 4 days to complete the entire trek route. It provides an opportunity to immerse in ever-changing alpine grasslands, beautiful mountain vistas, and peaceful forest walks. The trek is well known for its snowy trails in winter and breathtaking views of the Garhwal Himalayas, including Mt. Bandarpunch, Black Peak, Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda (DKD), Janoli, and the Gangotri mountain range. Features like lush green meadows, easy trails, and majestic Himalayan views make it a perfect destination to visit in summer. When snow in the winter months is added to these features, it also becomes an excellent winter trekking destination, attracting adventure enthusiasts and snow lovers from all over the country.
Highlights of Dayara Bugyal Trek:
1. Raithal Village
The trek starts from Raithal village, which is not only a base camp but also has cultural value in itself. Before and after the trek, one can interact with the local community of the village and visit the ancient Panchpura, the divine temple of Bhagwati, and Someshwar Devta. Panchpura is a 500-year-old, earthquake-resistant house that still retains its old structure, giving an understanding of the ancient lifestyle. The Bhagwati temple is truly divine, as the idol is carved unclearly on old stone, similar to the traditional idols seen in ancient temples.
2. Forest Walk & Wildlife
Starting the trek from the base camp, the first thing one comes across is a forest of oak, rhododendron, and maple. The cool, fresh air and a silent walk with the chirping of birds feel relaxing. The backdrop view of Srikanth and other mountains catches attention when seen through openings in the forest trail. Wildlife like deer, bear, or leopard is very rare because the forest is not far from the village and wildlife tends to avoid human paths. Trekkers are more likely to come across Himalayan hares and birds like the Himalayan monal, jungle fowl, grey francolin, Indian jungle crow, blue magpie, Himalayan bulbul, long-tailed shrike, grey treepie, and other species; however, the appearance of these birds depends on the season. Spring and summer are the months when most of these birds can be seen.
3. Gui Lake & Alpenglow View from its Campsite
Gui is a campsite located in the forest and next to a small alpine lake. In winter, the lake freezes, making it a scenic attraction. However, more than the lake itself, the real highlight of the campsite is the stunning sunset view. While sunrise is equally beautiful, it is the evenings that truly grab attention. When rays scatter across Srikanth and the surrounding mountains, it creates a cinematic view that everyone wants to capture on camera.
4. Vast Stretches of Meadows – A Major Highlight in Themselves
When the trail rises above the tree line and enters the meadow, a peaceful calm surrounds trekkers. Moving upward toward Dayara Top and Bakariya Top, the vast grasslands embrace everyone with their sheer expanse. The experience is not limited to the views along the way; at the top, the breathtaking view of Bandarpunch, stretching toward its foothills, excites everyone to keep moving forward. The grasslands extend in all directions. Their vastness becomes even more apparent knowing that toward the foothills of Bandarpunch, there are two other separate high altitude meadows, Siyari Bugyal and Gidara Bugyal, each requiring a separate itinerary and additional time to explore. This truly shows the immense scale of the Bugyal region visible from Dayara. These pasturelands are used by shepherds in summer, and in winter, when they become completely covered with snow, the shepherds return to the foothills of the lower Himalayas.
5. Bakariya Top – The Highest Point of Dayara Bugyal with Close-Up Views of Mt. Bandarpunch
From Dayara Top, it usually takes around half an hour to reach Bakariya in non-winter months, but during winter it can take 2 to 3 hours depending on snow conditions. These extra hours are absolutely worth it. Bakariya is the highest point of the Dayara Bugyal, situated at a maximum altitude of 3,780 meters (~12,400 feet) above sea level. From this point, a stunning panoramic view of the entire region unfolds, including Mt. Bandarpunch and Black Peak up close, probably the best views of these peaks on the whole trek. From this point, the mountain range, deep valleys, and endless meadows come together in a breathtaking panorama.
Reaching Bakariya Top is not always included in every itinerary as it depends on time and weather conditions, but when accessible, it is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of the trek.
6. Uttarakhand’s Famous Butter Festival
The butter festival of Dayara is celebrated in the monsoon month of August, usually from the 16th to the 18th. Trekkers visiting Dayara Bugyal during this season can witness the festivities. Unlike ordinary festivals where colored powders are used, here butter and milk serve as the natural colors of celebration. The festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is believed to protect the grasslands, which provide vital grazing pastures for the villagers’ cattle.

Best Time for Dayara Bugyal trek
The Dayara Bugyal trek is accessible year-round, and the best time to visit truly depends on your trekking priorities. The trek is highly recommended during three distinct seasons, each offering a unique experience:
- Autumn (September to November): This period offers the most favorable trekking conditions and is often considered the overall best time for beginners, families, and view enthusiasts. The weather is cool and pleasant, the skies are crystal clear for spectacular mountain vistas, and the trails are completely dry.
- Winter (December to February): This season offers a thrilling, adventurous experience and is ideal for snow lovers and experienced trekkers. Dayara Bugyal turns into a stunning winter wonderland, providing the best snowy trails and snow-covered landscapes. It is essential to carry heavy warm layers of clothing and appropriate winter gear, as night temperatures consistently drop to sub-zero.
- Spring (March to April): This period provides a beautiful transition, ideal for those seeking a pleasant climate and the famous Rhododendron blooms. The weather is favourable for beginners and families, though snow can still be present, especially in March. By late April, you can experience a pleasant climate, melting snow, clear skies, and emerging vibrant green landscapes.
The trek is generally avoided during the peak monsoon months (July and August) due to heavy rainfall, but the region hosts the unique Anduri Utsav (Butter Festival) in mid-August. If you aim for Butter Festival, then monsoon also can be considered for trekking with some preparations.
How Difficult is the Dayara Bugyal trek
Dayara Bugyal trek is perfect choice for beginners because of its easy trails and good access to transportation from major hubs like Dehradun, Rishikesh or Delhi. However, the difficulty level of the trek varies according to the season you choose. It is mostly easy in spring, summer, and autumn. The trek becomes challenging in the winter months because walking on fresh or hard snow is a challenge activity in itself. It needs good skills and descent fitness level. While the route itself is not steep, the difficulty is upgraded to moderate in winter, especially if the trail is not opened after heavy snow. Walking on knee-deep fresh snow is very exhausting and even experienced trekkers can find it challenging. It is always important to be mentally and physically prepared, and checking the weather forecast beforehand is an absolute must.
In terms of elevation, the highest point on this trek is around 12,400 feet (approximately 3,780 meters). This altitude is not usually a sensitive elevation for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or other serious altitude-related sicknesses. However, the chances of minor symptoms are never zero, as altitude sensitivity depends heavily on a person’s acclimatization. Our itinerary is curated in a way that gives you enough time to acclimatize properly so you can enjoy the trek to its fullest.
The trekking trails are well-maintained and the landscapes are not overly steep, which makes the trek accessible to most fit trekkers with decent physical fitness. This includes specific, common trekking groups such as families with children above 10 years and senior citizens below 70. Its easy terrain is the best option to explore the natural beauty of the Himalayas without facing overly challenging terrain.
A major highlight is that you get to enjoy spectacular, up-close Himalayan sightseeing opportunities without reaching over 4,000 meters or 5,000 meters above sea level. You don’t have to face the treacherous landscapes and hazardous weather patterns associated with high-altitude expeditions to enjoy the most rewarding views on this trek.

Though this altitude presents a low risk of serious altitude sickness, you are still advised to immediately inform your trek leader if you face any symptoms (such as a persistent headache or nausea).

This time period is ideal for beginners as they can experience stunning Himalayan views, a scenic landscape, sunny warm days, clear skies, and occasional rainfall during the trek. Mornings and evenings are cool compared to daytime temperatures.
