Gartang Gali located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand is a historic trail that was used for the Indo-Tibet trade. To visit Gartang Gali, the permit is a must which you can get offline or online.

Offline Process

Gartang Gali is located near Lanka Bridge, Bhaironghati, Uttarkashi. Outside Gartang Gali there’s a checkpoint from where you can get your permit. Per permit fee is INR 200-250 and you will need to submit a Govt ID like Aadhaar or PAN. For foreign nationals, the permit fee is INR 842.

Online Process

Step 1: Visit SWS and go to the registration tab. All the important fields will show up there.

Step 2: Start by filling in all the details such as date, trek, email address, mobile number, Aadhaar number, etc.

Step 3: Keep documents like Aahdaar Card or PAN. You will need to upload it there.

Step 4: Upload the affidavit which is to be made on INR 100 Stamp Paper. You can check the format here.

Step 5: In Trek and Agency Details, choose the agency with whom you have agreed for the Permit file process. Every agency has their own file charges so contact them prior to making your permits.

Step 6: In the detailed itinerary section, mention the date you will be visiting Gartang Gali.

Step 7: Proceed with adding details of all the trek participants.

Step 8: Click and submit your application. The payment page will open where you need to fill in your name, email, and mobile number details. After payment which takes 1-2 minutes to complete your permit will be sent to your email or you can download it with a print option also.

Cost of Gartang Gali Permit

Uttarkashi Tourism Department charges INR 206 as the Forest Fee and INR 20 as the Tourism Department Processing Fee. So, in total a person needs to pay INR 226 on SWS. Per person, Gartang Permission costs INR 226 for Indian nationals and INR 842 for foreign nationals.

Important Points to Keep in Mind

  • Mention your official name in your application, not the nickname.
  • Gartang Gali remains closed from month of November to March
  • Keep a check on the weather forecast. If the weather is gloomy or it’s raining, permits won’t be issued.
  • Keep enough water and snacks with you before entering the trail.
  • Follow the Leave No Trace protocol.
  • The nearest places to Gartang are Harsil and Dharali, you can plan your stay there.
  • Drones are not allowed in the Gangotri National Park.
  • If you plan to bring a camera along with you then you may need to pay extra charges.
