Every year, thousands of tourists visit Nelong Valley, which is one of the hidden gems that comes under the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and is part of Gangotri National Park. What makes it different from others is that it is known as the Ladakh of Uttarakhand, as it shares a border with the Kinnaur district of Himachal and Tibet.

The Nelong Valley was given its name because it features a cold desert terrain that reminds one of Ladakh and the Spiti Valley. Other than that, you will also find endangered wildlife animals such as blue sheep and musk deer. In addition, the natural gully carved by the Bhagirathi River is another highlight of this valley.

Nelong Valley to Welcome Visitors Throughout the Year

However, in accordance with the directives from the state administration, the Deputy Director of Gangotri National Park stated that the Nelong Valley will remain open during the winter season, but only after complying with some rules, to ensure that its natural beauty and environment remain unharmed.

This region not only provides explorers with the eye-catching Tibetan Plateau but also offers the opportunity to come across a snow leopard. Apart from that, you can also visit the 150-year-old Gartang Gali.

Individuals who love to explore can execute this trip in any season, whether it’s the green beauty of summer or the valley covered in snow. Authorities want to prevent a sensitive region like Uttarkashi from getting overcrowded. Nature lovers must get an official permit from the District Magistrate’s office.

New Winter Guidelines for Visiting Nelong Valley

The decision to open Nelong Valley comes with a set of strict rules and regulations that travellers must follow. Since it is located in a high-altitude area and near the Indo-China border, it is known as one of the largest national parks in Uttarakhand.

Since this is the first time the government has taken such a big step, they will keep an eye on November through March. During this time frame, the entry into the area will be restricted to a daily limit of 100 tourists and 20 vehicles per day

According to the plan, nature lovers can explore the valley between 08:00 am and 11:00 am and must exit by 05:00 pm because an overnight stay is not allowed on the premises.

For day visits, Indians have to pay an entry fee of INR 300, while foreign nationals are supposed to pay INR 1,200. The officials also added that drones, photography, and videography are not allowed in this area.

Future Plans to Boost Tourism in Nelong Valley

As part of the plan, this decision is just a small step toward developing one of these hidden gems of the Garhwal Himalayas in a supportive way. One of their prime aims is to transform this valley into a tourism hub without compromising its natural beauty and respecting the security protocols. Higher authorities are looking forward to improving the road connectivity, safety, and visitor management.

Another prominent step that supports future of Nelong and nearby areas like Harshil Valley is by opening homestays and hiring local guides. This will not only make your journey memorable but also allow them to earn income for those living in remote areas. Other than that, the authorities are also training locals to focus on ecotourism practices, giving tourism a chance to grow responsibly in the area.
