Best Time to Visit Tungnath Temple – Opening Date

Tungnath Temple is open only during the snow-free months. In 2025, the temple is scheduled to open on 2 May and will remain open until around 1 November, just after Diwali.

The best time to visit is from May to June and from September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, skies are usually clear, and the trekking trail is in good condition. In May and June, rhododendrons bloom and the temperature is mild. After the monsoon season, in September and October, the landscape turns lush and green. The monsoon season, especially July and August, is best avoided due to slippery trails, heavy rainfall, and the risk of landslides. In winter, the region receives heavy snowfall and the temple remains closed.

How Difficult is the Tungnath Trek

The Tungnath trek from Chopta is considered easy to moderate in difficulty but can be steep and tiring due to the altitude. The distance is about 3.5 kilometers one way from Chopta to the Tungnath temple at 3680 meters. From there, an additional 1.5-kilometer climb takes you to Chandrashila Peak at 3960 meters. Trekkers usually take 2 to 4 hours to reach Tungnath, depending on fitness levels. The return journey is quicker. Chandrashila adds about 1 to 2 hours more to the trek.

The trail is well-marked with stone steps and dirt paths passing through forests and alpine meadows. It’s not technically difficult, but it is physically demanding, especially near the top. Beginners can do it with adequate rest, water, and warm clothing. It’s advisable to spend a night in Chopta before the trek to help your body adjust to the altitude. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol helps prevent altitude sickness. In the winter months, snow and ice make the trail more challenging and only experienced trekkers with proper gear should attempt it.

History of Tungnath Temple

Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar Shiva temples, and its origin goes back to the Mahabharata era. According to legend, after the Pandavas defeated the Kauravas, they wanted Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for the bloodshed. Shiva tried to avoid them by taking the form of a bull and disappearing into the earth. Parts of his body appeared in different locations, and his arms are believed to have emerged at Tungnath. The Pandavas later built the temple here. This temple is believed to be around 1000 years old and was rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya. The name Tungnath means Lord of the Peaks, and it is located at an altitude of about 3680 meters, making it the highest Shiva temple in the world. Some legends also say that Lord Rama meditated at Chandrashila near the temple, and Ravana too performed penance for Shiva in this region.

Tungnath is still an active pilgrimage site. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and contains a Shiva Linga representing Shiva’s arms. Priests from the Maithani Brahmin community of Makkumath perform rituals here, which is different from the other Kedar temples that have priests from South India. Daily prayers include morning rituals and evening aarti. The temple is especially significant during festivals like Maha Shivaratri and Dussehra. Visitors are expected to maintain decorum, dress modestly, and not carry non-vegetarian food or alcohol in the temple area. In the winter months, after Diwali, the idol of Tungnath is taken down to its winter shrine at Makkumath.
