The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek offers more than its dense forests, velvety meadows, and breathtaking views of the towering peaks. The trails of this alpine meadow are filled with the treasures of several folklores and mysterious legends about local deities. It is a popular route for the famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, performed every 12th year.
How Bedni Bugyal got its name and the story behind Bedni Kund
A local legend tells that Bedni Bugyal got its name from the word ‘Ved’ or ‘Vedas.’ It is said that Lord Brahma composed the three Vedas at the top of Bedni Bugyal. Here, you will also find the Bedni Kund which holds spiritual value for the visitors. There are many stories attached to this Kund. It is said that Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva on their way to Kailash Parvat took a dip in this small alpine lake. Another legend says that Goddess Nanda Devi took the form of Mahishasur Mardini Goddess to kill the demon Raktabija at Bedni Kund. During Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, devotees carry Nanda Devi Doli to Kailash Parvat and stop at Bedni Bugyal to take a dip in the sacred Bedni Kund.
Story of Latu Devta Temple at Wan Village
On your way back to Lohajung from Ali Bedni Bugyal, you will cross Wan Village, a small spiritual hamlet that features the popular Latu Devta Temple. Loaded with many mystical and mythological stories, this temple is a must-visit.
It is said that Latu Devta was the adopted brother of the Goddess Nanda Devi (avatar of Maa Parvati). Once he was accompanying her to Kailash Parvat and they stopped at Wan where Nanda Devi wanted to bathe in Kali Ganga. Here, Latu Devta got thirsty and asked the local women of the village for water to quench his thirst. They gave him a pitcher full of an intoxicating drink as a prank. Unaware, Latu Devta finished the entire pitcher. On her return, Nanda Devi was enraged when she saw him lay unconscious. She put a curse on the village that they will have to worship Latu Devta and no one will be allowed to enter the temple or see him.
To this day, the inner sanctum of the temple remains closed and only opens for one day on ‘Chaitra Purnima.’ Only the priest is allowed to enter it after covering his eyes. You will find one large ancient Deodar Tree at the temple, standing tall in a region where you will only find Cypress or Surai Trees. Locals believe that Latu Devta still resides inside the trunk of this Deodar Tree in the form of Nag Raj, protecting his mani.
At Wan, many devotees visit this temple to worship the deity and hang bells to offer their prayers. Many fairs are organised near Latu Devta Temple, which comes alive with several Bhajans and Kirtans being sung amidst the scenic location of the village.

For trekkers, the winter season, especially December, January and February, is a perfect choice, which will be made even better by good snowfall in Ali Bedni Bugyal. After snowfall in the winter season, the meadows, Himalayan peaks including Trishul and Nanda Ghunti and the surrounding area turn into beautiful natural snow beauty. When passing through the forests in winter, the first rays of the morning rise and reach close touching the icicles, bringing a kind of freshness and vitality in the heart. Apart from trekking, the snowy areas make this place suitable for skiing trips and other snow-related activities.
While altitude sickness might not be a real concern during the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, you must be very careful because safety is the first priority. This destination lies at an altitude of approximately 12,550 feet above sea level. While going above 8,000 feet increases the chances of altitude sickness, if you properly acclimatize and follow all the precautions, you will not be affected by AMS or any other sickness. Overall, altitude sickness is not common on the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, but you are advised to inform your trek leader if you experience any symptoms.
Jolly Grant Airport, also known as Dehradun Airport, is the nearest airport to Ali Bedni Bugyal. It is located approximately 25 kilometers from Dehradun and 15 kilometers from Rishikesh.
Yes, you can camp at Ali Bedni Bugyal. Camping is the dream of many trekkers, but we should be aware of the preservation of the soft grasslands of these meadows and always pitch our camps at frequently used campsites only. This will help preserve the vegetation of the grassland.
Bugyal is a term used in the Indian Himalayas to refer to high-altitude meadows or pasturelands. Ali Bedni Bugyal is known as Asia’s largest alpine meadow. In Uttarakhand there are other similar alpine meadows such as Dayara Bugyal, Harunta Bugyal, Siyari Bugyal, Gidara Bugyal, and Kush Kalyan Bugyal.
Every campsite during this trek features dry pit toilets. You must carry your own toilet papers and hygiene essentials.
No, there is no ATM available in Lohajung or the nearby areas of the trek. It is advised to withdraw cash from Rishikesh itself. You might find other ATMs en route, but they are mostly out of service, and stopping vehicles like this can also hamper our timeline.
Lohajung, the starting point of the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, is also the last place where you can charge your gadgets. You must carry your own power banks or extra batteries. Trekking often involves activities like photography and videography, so it is advised to carry extra power banks and charge them in Lohajung before you head out on the trek.
Yes, Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is perfect for all age groups, and we have often seen 10-year-old children on this trail walking with ease as if they were locals of the region. It is a moderately easy trek with no significant difficulties to deal with, such as high altitude sickness, terrain challenges, or navigation issues. Obviously, it is a mountain trek, and dealing with challenges like sickness, difficult terrain, and other factors is common, but it’s completely manageable, which is why this trek is perfectly suitable for families with children.
