Brief Description

The seven lake walk is also known as "the lake of the gods" or "the lake of the gods." It is located in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. The trek is surrounded on both sides by breathtaking valleys: the Bhagirathi Valley on the west and the Bhilangana Valley on the east.

The Kush Kalyan Plateau, which is surrounded on all sides by numerous other small lakes, is located to the north of this lake. The peak of this hill is where the lake is located. The locals believe the lake to be rather auspicious, so they perform an annual ritual of taking their god around it on their shoulders.

Another local legend about this lake is that once, after performing a rite in this lake, a king gave Lord Vishnu a thousand sahastra flowers. Trekking in Uttarakhand is a must-do for any avid trekker because it allows you to see spectacular green meadows, wild fauna, and flora, as well as great peaks like Jaonli, Srikanth, and other high Himalayan ranges.

This location is also remote, with few visitors or trekkers passing by.The S ahastra Tal trek is a lesser-known but stunning and fascinating journey through the Himalayas.

This region is known as the "Lake District of Garhwal," according to Bill Aitken, a popular travel writer, and mountain lover. Due to the numerous lakes in the region, this is understandable. Between Bhagirathi valley in the west and Bhilangana valley in the east, this trail runs northerly. The Sahastra Tal lake (also known as Shastru Tal or Sahasra Tal) is a medium-sized alpine lake located at an elevation of over 15,000 feet (4600 meters).

Detail Itinerary

Day 1 : Drive from Dehradun to Bhatwari – 175 Km – 8/9 hours. Lodge accommodation

Our first day will begin with a drive from Dehradun to Bhatwari, which is located at a height of 5000 feet. We will travel a cumulative distance of 220 kilometres and will arrive at our destination in about 10 hours. On our route, we'll pass through Rishikesh, Chamba, and Dharasu. Bhatwari is also the seat of the district tehsil. We'll be travelling up the Bhagirathi Canal. We will spend the night at a lodge after arriving at our destination.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 2 : Trek to Gairi – 8 Km – 4/5 hours. Camp.

Our trek will begin with a 45-minute descent from Bhatwari to Malla on the Uttarkashi- Gangotri route. Malla is a small village that sits on both sides of the Bhagirathi River. We'll arrive in Silla, the last village, after crossing the river bridge. We'll climb up a path through the evergreen mountain forest after crossing the village. After a 4-5-hour hike, we'll arrive at Gairi, the only place with water after Silla and a cattle pasture for farmers during the monsoon and summer months. We'll be spending the night here.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 3 : Trek to Kush Kalyan – 10 Km – 6/7 hours. Camp

We'll start our trek by climbing for an hour through the jungle before we enter an opening with covered hut-like structures that provide a spectacular view of the north. We can reach Oak woods after passing through this opening. From here, the ascent gets more difficult. To get to Chuli La pass, we'll have to ascend for 3 hours. The road gets more difficult after reaching the pass and descends into the meadows. It's worth noting that once we hit the Kush Kalyan Plateau, there's no water supply for a long stretch. The Kush Kalyan peak is close to our camping spot. This day's total trekking distance is 12 km, which can be completed in under 6 hours.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 4 : Trek to Kyarki – 12 Km – 6/7 hours. Camp

When we ascend higher on our fourth day, the amount of tree cover decreases and the meadows become more visible. We descent for a short time before climbing to Bhowani Bugyal, where our destination is just 2 hours away. We'll descend after crossing the pass to reach our camping spot. We will cover a distance of 12 kilometres in around 6-7 hours. We'll retire for the night until we arrive, in order to get some much-needed rest.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 5 : Trek to Lamb Tal – 6 Km – 3/4 hours. Camp

The journey today will be brief. We'll hike up to a trail above the Kyarki campsite. This point will begin to receive snow in June, and during the monsoon, this area will be covered in flowers, mostly Brahma kamal and Fen kamal. After passing through this ridge, we enter another ridge with several bends at first, but later widens to form a track known as "chhe Phuti Road," which means "six-foot-wide path," which was built during the British era. After some time, small and medium lakes, such as Kokuli Tal and Lamb Tal, will begin to develop. The total distance is about 6 km, and it takes about 4-5 hours to complete. Now after reaching it is rest time.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 6 : Trek to Sahastra Tal and back – 12 Km – 7/8 hours. Camp.

On this day, we'll attempt a reasonably difficult climb to Sahastra Tal. We'll start by climbing in a zigzag pattern towards the ridge. The climb will be easy at first, but it will become moderate as it progresses. Since there will be snow in the autumn, trekking will be much more time consuming and difficult. Kokuli Dhar is the name of the mountain, and the view from the top is breathtaking. The climb to the ridge would take no more than an hour, and we can normally see the Sahastra peak from here, but visibility is limited if the peak is obscured by clouds. From here, we travel to Dhoni Tal, a medium-sized pool. Following that, we ascend the rocky path to Sahastra Tal, a big lake with crystal clear waters. We'll head to our camps after an hour or two of exploring. We will trek a total distance of 12 km, which could take 7-8 hours.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 7 : Trek to Kush Kalyan via Kyari Bugyal – 18 Km – 7/8. hours.

The total distance we will travel is 28 kilometres, and it will take us 7-8 hours to complete. We'll descend from Kyari Bugyal to Kyari Khal and then proceed to Kush Kalyan, our final destination.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 8 : Trek to Sila village – 18 Km – drive to Bhatwari – 1 hour. Lodge accommodation.

We'll start by descending through the meadows and then reach the thick coniferous forests. We will pass through the village of Pinswar while trekking. The distance travelled would be approximately 10 kilometres, and it will take approximately 5-6 hours to reach the point where our car will take us to Ghansali. The journey will take 3-4 hours. As a result of its low elevation, Ghansali is very congested. We will arrive in the evening and will then spend the night in our lodge.

Sahastratal Trek

Day 9 : Drive from Bhatwari to Dehradun – 175 Km – 8/9 hours.

We will be heading towards Dehradun from where we started our journey. The approximate distance is 150 kilometres, and the journey should take 8 hours.

Yes, fitness is essential for a trek, especially if you intend to take on a difficult trek in the Himalayas or other mountainous locations. Trekking entails walking for long periods of time through uneven terrain, often ascending and descending steep hills at high heights. To complete the walk safely and enjoyably, you must have a particular level of physical fitness.

Here are some of the reasons why fitness is essential for a trek:

    • Endurance:  Trekking is a physically difficult sport that necessitates endurance. You may be walking for several hours each day over several days, therefore it is critical to have a decent degree of cardiovascular fitness to keep up with the pace of the trek.
    • Strength: Because you may be climbing steep hills and descending rocky terrain, trekking requires strength, particularly in the lower body. You may also need to carry a rucksack with your gear and supplies, thus strong leg muscles are required to hold the weight.
    • Altitude: Many treks in the Himalayas and other hilly places include high-altitude trekking, which can result in altitude sickness. Physical fitness can help lower the risk of altitude sickness since your body adapts better to the thin air at higher elevations.
    • Enjoyment: Being physically fit will help you appreciate the journey more since you will be able to keep up with the group and take in the lovely landscape without being too tired.
