How to Reach Uttarkashi: A Complete Guide

Uttarkashi, also known as Somyakashi and Barahat, is the administrative head of Uttarkashi district, located at an elevation of 1200 m on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. Here is a detailed guide on how to reach Uttarkashi.

By Road

The road network from Dehradun and Rishikesh is widely used by locals and tourists. To reach Uttarkashi by road, first, you need to reach Dehradun. From Dehradun, you will find multiple options.

State Transport Bus:
Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses to Uttarkashi leave as early as 5:30 am from Dehradun Hill Station. Online tickets are available via the UTC booking portal, and tickets cost around INR 350-400.

Private Buses:
Private bus services like Vishwanath Seva are easily available from Parade Ground. Unlike state buses, these private buses have multiple departures throughout the day. The ticket costs around INR 350-400.

Shared Taxis:
Bolero and Tata Sumo are widely used local taxis here. There are two spots where you can get a taxi: one is Rispana Pul and the other is Parade Ground. Taxis usually leave early, from 5:00 am to 10:00 am, so make sure you reach these pickup points on time. Per seat charges are around INR 400-500 per person. These taxis take less time compared to buses but can be limited in space.

Uttarkashi Town

By Air:

The nearest domestic airport to Uttarkashi is Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun. From your home city, you can take a flight to Dehradun. If you live in North India, you should book a direct flight to Dehradun. But if you live outside of North India, it’s recommended to book a flight to Delhi and from there, a road journey to Dehradun.

From Delhi, you can take state-run buses from UTC and HRTC. Private buses can also be easily booked via the Redbus and Abhibus apps.

By Train:

The nearest railway station to Uttarkashi is Dehradun Railway Station. Trains from various Tier 1 cities connect with Dehradun.

  • From Kolkata: Kumbha Express runs on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • From Delhi: Vande Bharat Express from Anand Vihar leaves every day of the week except Thursday and takes only 6 hours.

Train journeys can be time-consuming, but they are one of the best ways to experience India up close. Once you have reached Dehradun, you can follow the road journey mentioned above.

Via Helicopter (Fastest Way)

Heritage Aviation operates a helicopter service from Dehradun to Chinyalisaur twice a day at 10 am and 4:30 pm, with a ticket cost of INR 3000 + GST. It takes around 35 minutes to reach Chinyalisaur, and from there you can get a taxi to Uttarkashi. Within 2 hours, you will reach Uttarkashi from Dehradun. More details can be found here.

Self Drive

If you plan to bring your own two-wheeler or four-wheeler, you can go via the Dehradun, Landour, Suwakholi, and Chinyalisaur route. The roads are pretty decent, and the scenic journey will amaze you. Make sure to stop at Moriana Top for a view of the Garhwal Himalayas. If you want to enjoy the road journey but don’t have a vehicle, you can hire a bike or scooter from Dehradun. The cost will be around INR 800-1000 depending on the vehicle you choose.
