Altitude: 4000 ft.

Day 1 of this majestic Gulabi Kantha Trek will begin with your arrival at Dehradun from your hometown. Our team members will pick you up from Dehradun and then we’ll take you towards Barkot by Van. On the way, as you leave Dehradun behind, it will feel like a gradual ascent and slight increase in Altitude. Passing through Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Lakhamandal, and Naugaon, you will reach Barkot in 5 to 6 hours. Additionally, you will get glimpses of coniferous trees, Pahadi cattle, Himalayan Birds, and the residents of en-route towns. If you are from outside Uttarakhand, then you should observe these en-route wonders of nature and glimpses of Garhwal.

Day 2- Barkot to Hanuman Chatti Drive and trek to Kandola

Trek Distance: 36 Km Drive and then a 5.5 Km trek

Altitude: 9,740 ft

The second day of the Gulabi Kantha trek will begin with the target of reaching basecamp Hanuman Chatti. The distance between Hanuman Chatti and Barkot is about 36 Km, so it will take about 1.5 hours only. As the journey will be short, you will have ample time to enjoy and grasp the en-route surroundings. On this route from Barkot to Hanuman Chatti, you will pass through various hamlets of Garhwal, which showcase the Pahadi Culture the most.

After you reach the Hanuman Chatti, then the main adventure will begin. Let me tell you, Hanuman Chatti is the place where the local river Hanuman Ganga merges with the Holy River Yamuna. This is one of the religious significance of Hanuman Chatti. Besides this, there is a route of Yamunotri Dham from Hanuman Chatti onwards, but this route is distinct from Gulabi Kantha Trek.

Hanuman Chatti to Kandola Campsite

Note: Hanuman Chatti is the last developed town on this route, so you must buy all the necessary things from here and carry enough water.

From Hanuman Chatti, when you begin trekking, you will see the agriculture fields on both sides. After a few minutes of hiking over the trail, you will feel like it’s a completely isolated, serene region. Initially, you will feel fatigued in less intervals, so it’s recommended to take small breaks while hiking.

Passing through the fields, forests and a small Kali Mata Temple, after 3 hours of trekking, you will reach a hamlet known as Nisni. This is a small village that falls on the route of the Gulabi Kantha trek. Here, you will see the Garhwali culture infused in every activity like their lifestyle, accent, attire, food, and so on.

After crossing this village, again you will see the agriculture fields on both sides of the trail. In some portions, there will be terrace farming also. From here onwards, the elevation will increase, and you will feel tired more often. As the elevation increases, you will see the dense vegetation on both sides of the trail.

After hiking on this trail for approximately 2-3 more hours,  you will reach today’s stop at Kandola Campsite. There will be a vast ground suitable for mass camping. From this Kandola campsite, you will get views of tall, smooth-trunk trees everywhere, a few chhani, and the valley from the edges. Additionally, here, you will see the goosebumps-giving sunset. In a nutshell, you will take a night break here at this campsite. At night, you will stay in camps and will enjoy the camping night traditions like bonfire, group dance and a lot of fun.

Day 3- Kandola to Seema Thatch

Trek Distance:  5.5 Km

Altitude: 11,385 ft

On Day 3 of Gulabi Kantha Trek, you will trek to Seema Thatch, which is also a campsite close to the final summit. In the morning, watch the sunrise from Kandola and then begin hiking for your next stop. From Kandola to Seema Thatch, it’s about a 5.5 Km distance that you can cover in 6 to 7 hours. From here, there will be comparatively more elevated ridges and trails.

Along with enjoying the en-route flora of nature, you can observe the unique wildlife and birds at high altitudes. In the last 1 km, the trail is way steeper, so you need to keep yourself energised and passionate for the last 1 km before Seema Thatch. As soon as you arrive at Seema Thatch, what you will get as a reward is the distant yet magnificent view of Bandarpoonch. Along with it, there will be a point known as Jhandi Point in Seema Thatch. Here, you will see our Indian Flag. This all apart, you will spend this night here in camps.

Note: If you are fond of skiing and are trained, then the Seema Thatch region is perfect for this adventure during Winter. But you should practise this only under the supervision of an expert.

Day 4- Seema Thatch to Gulabi Kantha and back to Kandola

Trek distance: 3 Km (Seema to the Summit)

Max Altitude: 13,200 ft (4,023 m)

Day 4 will be the final day, which will take you to the final destination, Gulabi Kantha. In the morning, when you begin trekking, it will take hardly 2 hours to reach the summit. But the trail from Seema Thatch onwards is tough and steep. So you must be energised and prepared for this. After hiking over a trail covered with shrubs, and ascending on the steep portion, gradually, you will reach the top of Gulabi Kantha. From the Gulabi Kantha summit, you will get to see a number of peaks including Swargrohini, Black Peak, Draupadi ka Danda and Kedarkantha. You can spend half an hour there on the summit and inhale the mystic beauty of nature.

Returning from Gulabi Kantha to Kandola-

  • Distance: 8 Km
  • Time Taken: 6-7 hours

Thereafter, it will be a moment to trek down to the Kandola Campsite. From here, the Kandola Campsite will be around 7 Km. Initially, there will be a steep descent, so it will feel hard to hike down. Once you come to Seema Thatch, from there onwards it’s not that tough to trek. After hiking for about 5-6 hours, you will reach the Kandola Campsite. Here you will stay tonight.

Day 5- Kandola to Hanuman Chatti and drive to Dehradun

Distance: 5.5 Km trek & 172 km drive

On the 5th day of the Gulabi Kantha trek, it will be the last day. So, from Kandola, you will trek down to Hanuman Chatti, and it will take about 4-5 hours. Once you reach there, then we shall take you to Dehradun by van. From Hanuman Chatti to Dehradun, it is about 172 km, so you will reach there after driving for 5-6 hours. By reaching Dehradun, your Gulabi Kantha Trek will come to a beautiful end.

However, if you want to explore the snowy beauty of Gulabi Kantha, then it’s ideal to trek on Winters. Many people trek in winter, and mostly in this season, they end their trek a few meters before the actual point. Lastly, to witness the Pink beauty of the trek, you have to trek during monsoon season. But, due to rain, the trail is usually slippery, which is generally unsafe.

Winter

The trail of the Gulabi Kantha trek during the fall season gets heavily coated with pink petals of Rhododendron flowers. This results in a complete change of scenery with clear skies and no harsh sunlight over your head. The roads are easily accessible during this season and the hike also gets a little easier.

Summer
  • Temperature: (1.5°C to 12.5°C)

The trek to the Gulabi Kantha is most preferred in winter. During December, January, and even February, the place receives heavy snow. The icy layer sometimes even gets up to 1-2 feet and reaches our knees. However, the snow-covered landscapes of the trek multiply its beauty by a hundred. The trek may turn out to be a little difficult, but the views from the top are worth it. Also, there are multiple sports opportunities available during winter.

Difficulty Level of the Trek

Considering its terrain, the altitude gain and other significant factors, we categorised Gulabi Kantha an easy-moderate challenging trek. To complete this trek efficiently, you need to be physically fit as well as prepared. Before going on the trek, you should indulge in a few basic exercises like jogging, running, and jumping jack for one week.

Preparation for the Trek [Physical Fitness, AMS]

Treks are all about funadventurefinding yourself, etc, but only for those who are mentally and physically fit. Because activities like treks, especially a Himalayan trek, challenge you on different levels in unimaginable ways and situations.

Gulabi Kantha trek falls under easy to moderate level difficulty depending on your chosen time of the year. In summer, spring & autumn, you will find this trek easy. As the trek is best in winter, the snow takes the difficulty a level higher, making the preparation mentally and physically more important.

A) Physical and Mental Preparation

The trek difficulty dictates your level of fitness and preparations for it. As mentioned above, it can be an easy and easy to moderate level trek so prepare accordingly

We take acclimatisation seriously and make sure that our trekkers get proper time to acclimatise and rest in between. We will only trek for a short number of kilometers every day, giving your body the time it needs.

For summer, spring, and autumn seasons, you can follow an easy-level fitness routine

For Winter, you have to workout more because of the added difficult factors like cold climate, snow, and fog. The trails will have some snow in the beginning which will be hard in nature and hence slippery too. Moving forward, at the higher level the snow may reach your knee or waist level, and walking on powdery snow takes the test of your balancing skills, stamina level, endurance, and overall strength of your body

  • An easy level and weekend treks require a basic fitness level, where you should focus on building your stamina and strength. Start with walking/running and include a 45-minute to 1-hour workout (cardio + strength training).
  • A level-up in a fitness routine is required for an easy to moderate level trek like start aiming to run 5 km in under 40 mins, and strength training is a must.

Mental preparation includes thorough research of the trek you want to do or decide to. Understand the terrain, difficulty level, and the ways to get fit for it, look up for sudden situations that may happen, and how to tackle them. Being prepared gives you an edge to keep calm & handle a difficult situation.

  1. Exercises to achieve the goal

Cardiovascular Training: Running, cycling, and swimming to boost stamina.

Strength Training: Focus on leg exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups for endurance.

Core Strength: Planks, mountain climbers, and Russian twists to maintain balance on uneven trails.

Flexibility Exercises: Stretching, yoga, and dynamic warm-ups to prevent injuries.

Mental Conditioning: Visualisation techniques, breathing exercises, and meditation to strengthen focus and manage stress on difficult days.

Tip: For moderate to difficult-level treks, practice exercises with weights. Seek professional advice accordingly.

  1. Extra Tips related to the diet, muscle recovery, and healthy lifestyle routine.

Diet: Incorporate proteins like lentils, eggs, paneer, whey protein, etc for fast recovery after a strenuous trek. Whole grains like wheat, barley, etc for sustained energy, and leafy greens like spinach, bitter guard, and any seasonal veggie for those extra nutrients and building the immunity system.

Muscle Recovery: Plan rest days and add stretching, relaxing yoga poses or foam rolling after every workout.

Lifestyle Routine

Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption.

Start sleeping upto 8 hours.

Stay hydrated – drink 2 to 3 liters of water. To incorporate more nutrients, including coconut water, fruit, and vegetable juices.

B) Altitude Sickness Awareness

Altitude Sickness happens when your body cannot adjust to lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes. This happens mainly because your body doesn’t have enough time to acclimatize to a higher altitude or not enough time to get used to lower oxygen levels. 13,200 feet height of Gulabi Kantha is not really a concern, but chances are not zero too. So, being prepared is a key to fully experience a Himalayan Trek.

The trek also tests mental endurance. Waking up early, facing cold mornings, and staying motivated during long climbs are as much about attitude as physical strength. The pass day, in particular, requires calmness, focus, and trust in your team. Many trekkers finish the descent with a strong sense of achievement that stays with them long after the trek.

How to Prevent AMS on High-Altitude Treks-

  • Gradual Ascent: Climb slowly to give your body time to adjust.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
  • Rest and Sleep: Ensure ample rest, especially as you reach higher camps.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can lead to dehydration.

What to Do in Case of AMS or Other Illnesses-

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Stop and Rest: Pause your trek to recover. Try not to cover your ears, offload your backpack, and sit down.
  • Most Important – Inform your trek leader, they can assess the situation better and find solutions faster.
  • Descend if Necessary: Descend immediately to base camp. Our team with the vehicle and necessary help will be there for further action.
  • Seek Medical Help: After descending, our team will take you to the nearest hospital if needed.
  • Nearest Hospital: Barkot. For major issues- AIIMS Rishikesh.
