Phulara Ridge Trek Itinerary
Drive Distance: 185 km
Drive Time: 7-8 hours
Altitude: 6,400 ft
Reach Dehradun on Day 0 to avoid any delays on Day 1 pick-up as we provide the facility from Prince Chowk near Dehradun railway station.
We will aim to start the drive early as the journey to Sankri is long. The drive will be filled with the obvious Himalayan mountains peeking through dense forests, clouds and the rivers meandering through them. Yamuna River will join us after crossing the famous hill station Mussoorie till Nuangaon. From Mori, river Tons will accompany us all the way to Sankri.
Sankri is a small but beautiful village with only 270 people living there, helping us make a smooth trek. Sankri hosts trekkers for various other treks like Kedarkantha, Bali Pass, Burasu Pass, Ruinsar Tal, and many more, making it one of the famous basecamp villages.
After reaching Sankri, the evening is yours to rest, immerse in the surrounding beauty, and get acquainted with the new altitude.
Trek Distance: 4 km
Trek Time: 4-5 hours
Altitude: 8,800 ft
Altitude Gain: 2,400 ft
Today marks our first official trek day; after a hearty breakfast, we will ascend towards Juda ka Talab, a high-altitude lake. After the first few meters, we will leave the buzz of the main village behind and be surrounded by forest harmony.
After walking for 1.5 km, you will pass the famous ruined Dhaba (food outlet), also known as “Basuri Wala Dhaba” or “Jainol Thatch.” This is the first clearing on our way, where we will rest for a while. After walking again for a short distance, another small clearing known as “Marikoda” will come into sight. From this point, you can see Mt. Dhunda Peak and Phulara Ridge itself.
Continuing to walk on the trail for another 30 minutes, the main trail for Juda ka Talab will begin. At this point, you will be walking through a dense forest of tall trees like pine, oak, deodar, etc. Be on the alert to spot indigenous birds like the Himalayan Monal (State bird of Uttarakhand) and hear the different but beautiful sounds they make.
We will reach JKT in another 40 to 50 minutes, and you may encounter the “Gecko Rock,” which looks like a lizard’s head helping up high. The trail will be covered by colourful wildflowers, purple lilies, and yellow marsh marigolds, especially after the monsoon or in spring.
Depending on the conditions, we will camp in the nearby clearings, like Sikolta, for easy water access.
What better way to end the day than by spending some time near a calm lake between the mountains and enjoying a delicious meal?
Juda Ka Talab has many folk tales related to its formation; one of the many famous ones is related to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva opened one strand of hair from his hair bun (called Juda in Hindi), and a droplet of water fell from it, forming this lake.
Trek Distance: 5 km
Trek Time: 4-5 hours
Altitude: 11,200 ft
Altitude Gain: 2,400 ft
Today’s trail is filled with ascend, descend, meadows and a wooden bridge with the forever beautiful sight of snow-capped Himalayas in the background.
We will walk through a dense forest of pine, deodar, birch, etc, for 1 km, which we crossed yesterday. After this, the trail gets narrower for the coming 500 m and is filled with uplifted roots of trees. Be careful while walking, and do not step or sit over them as you might fall.
After the ascend, you will come through a clearing where the Sankri mountain range is visible. From this point, we will descend for another 1 km and reach an old wooden bridge on a water stream, our water source. The hike continues with an incline of 45° to 50° to “Kharsu Thatch” for another 500 m.
From Kharsu Thatch’s top, you can see that the stream flows through the valley, dividing it into two parts. On the left side, you will see the Phulara Ridge, and on the right, the infamous Kedarkantha Peak (12,500 ft) is visible.
After taking a short break, we will continue to ascend for another half an hour. The pretty wildflowers will decorate the trail along the rhododendrons and bhoj patra trees. We will reach the “Dhunda Top,” the highest point of today’s hike. From here, prominent views of many peaks of the Purola region, like Swargrohini, Devkayara, Vijaya Top, et,c are visible.
Our camping site – Bhoj Gadi, is just a short walk away from this point. After rest, we will walk towards the top and spend some time there to acclimate our bodies to higher altitudes and return to our tents.
Ascend & Descend: 8.5 km
Time: 6-7 hours
Max Altitude: 12,150 ft
Altitude Gain: 995 ft
Today’s trail has the most awaited part of the trek – Phulara Ridge. After having energy energy-packed breakfast, we will start the long hike. It is advised to carry at least 2 litres of water with you as there will be no water source on the way, and the day consists of a long walk.
The 1st kilometre is an easy gradient flat surface walk, which will take 45-50 mins to cover. The trail will slowly start inclining and take you towards the ridge. Conserve your energy on this part to face strong winds on the ridge.
Words cannot describe the magnitude of Phulara ridge and the views from it. You will see many peaks like Mt. Swargrohini, Kalanag, Kedarkantha, Devkayara Valley, etc, clear and closer to you like never before on this trek.
Strong winds will remind you the nature’s forces, and from that height, deep valleys will add more to the thrill. Keep your belongings, like a cap, poncho, mobile phones, sunglasses, etc, safe.
The ridge walk will continue for 3.5 km and let you have ample time to soak in all the beauty surrounding it. We will stop before the descending point to have our lunch and rest for a while.
After lunch we will resume our trek and start descending towards the vast meadows of Pushatara. The grassland will be a good scenery, and the environment change after the ridge walk.
The walk from here will be easy as it will be on the soft grass-covered meadow, giving your feet a much-needed break. The serenity of the meadow will make you forget the distance covered while descending, calming your body and mind.
After crossing the meadows of Pushtara, we will again enter the dense forest. The trail will have an entrance marked by stones, which are also used by local communities of Gujjars, who visit these places in search of firewood, fodder, etc.
The stone-marked way will take us to our campsite of the day which is near a water stream. Given the nature of today’s trek, we will wrap the day early after a hot dinner and rest well.

Summer and autumn are the best times to visit Phulara Ridge when the weather conditions for trekking and the scenery around the destination are more favorable. From April to June, the climate is mild and warm. One can enjoy the soft grass with wildflowers in bloom and occasional snow patches on the trail. Autumn offers beautiful golden meadows and crisp air from the Himalayas. The weather temperature is completely manageable and only requires a little preparation related to clothing and other essentials. During this time, temperatures generally range between 10-20°C, providing ideal trekking. The skies are clear, offering a perfect view of surrounding Himalayan peaks like Mt Swaragarohini, Mt Bandarpunch, and Black Peak.
Below is a piece of detailed information on the best time to visit Phulara Ridge Trek inccluding their features and weather conditions:
- Temperature: Day – 12℃ to 17℃ | Night – May drop till Zero
- Months: April last week to June
Summer is the perfect season to enjoy crystal views of the Himalayan peaks in the mild temperature. Depending on snowfall in last season you may or may not find snow on Phulara Ridge.
What you’ll 100% find is the blooming colour flowers like rhododendrons, marigolds, etc., and a vast lush green meadow. After the harsh winters the scenery transforms with life returning in the region.
Summer provides the perfect temperatures to enjoy this trek with family and friends.
- Temperature: Day – 10℃ to 14℃ | Night – 0 to minus 3℃
- Months: Mid September to November
Autumn is another great option to explore Phulara Ridge, which provides 2 colour schemes for you to witness.
One is just after the downpour of monsoon, and the region will look all fresh, lively, and full of raging colours of flowers blooming. This is the ideal time for stargazing because the sky remains clear of any rain clouds, and snow is yet to arrive.
Another colour scheme transforms the area into a brown, yellow, and golden landscape, which you usually see online. The fragrance of pine, deodar, etc., will be hung in the air while walking on fallen leaves makes crunch sounds.
By the end of November or the first week of December, you may witness the season’s first snowfall.
Walking on a ridge in icy cold temperatures and freezing winds can be challenging; hence, trekking during winter is not allowed.
Note – Proper type of types of equipment like gaiters and spikes will be provided if snow is to be expected during the trek.
Phulara Ridge is an easy to moderate-level trek, which means the trek is suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. Though beginners are required to maintain a good fitness level to ace this trek easily.
As the trek spans over 4 days, it gives you ample time to acclimatise to higher altitudes without the threat of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
The trek is easy for the most part; what takes it to a level up is ridge walking, maintaining the balance and posture in strong winds and walking through it needs a fit body and strong mind. Apart from the ridge, the zigzag trails, walking over large logs in dense forests also tests your physical endurance and stamina.
It is advised to the trekkers to start following a workout routine a month or 2 prior. Aim to run over 5 kilometers under 35 minutes.
Treks are all about fun, adventure, finding yourself, etc, but only for those who are mentally and physically fit. Because activities like treks, especially a Himalayan trek, challenge you on different levels in unimaginable ways and situations.
Phulara Ridge trek falls under easy to moderate level trek depending on your chosen time of the year. In summer, spring & autumn, you will find this trek easy.
Being fit is like being equipped with the right weapons for a battle. With a fit body and strong mind, you can make the most out of your Phulara Ridge trek.
The trek difficulty dictates your level of fitness and preparations for it. As mentioned above, it can be an easy and easy to moderate level trek so prepare accordingly.
We take acclimatisation seriously and make sure that our trekkers get proper time to acclimatise and rest in between. This is neither a very long trek nor at a higher altitude, so we will only trek for a short number of kilometers every day, giving your body the time it needs.
In the beginning, the ascend from Sankri to Juda ka Talab campsite can be challenging as it is going to be your first day and changing altitude. The good part is that the trail is easy to follow, and the terrain is manageable, even for kids. Facilitated with a proper workout regime you can really take note of the surrounding environment and not waste time in catching your breath.
For summer, spring, and autumn seasons, you can follow an easy-level fitness routine.
For Winter, you have to workout more because of the added difficult factors like cold climate, snow, and fog. The trails will have some snow in the beginning which will be hard in nature and hence slippery too. Moving forward, at the higher level the snow may reach your knee or waist level, and walking on powdery snow takes the test of your balancing skills, stamina level, endurance, and overall strength of your body.
- An easy level and weekend treks require a basic fitness level, where you should focus on building your stamina and strength. Start with walking/running and include a 45-minute to 1-hour workout (cardio + strength training).
- A level-up in a fitness routine is required for an easy to moderate level trek like start aiming to run 5 km in under 40 mins, and strength training is a must.
Mental preparation includes thorough research of the trek you want to do or decide to. Understand the terrain, difficulty level, and the ways to get fit for it, look up for sudden situations that may happen, and how to tackle them. Being prepared gives you an edge to keep calm & handle a difficult situation.
- Exercises to achieve the goal
Cardiovascular Training: Running, cycling, and swimming to boost stamina.
Strength Training: Focus on leg exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups for endurance.
Core Strength: Planks, mountain climbers, and Russian twists to maintain balance on uneven trails.
Flexibility Exercises: Stretching, yoga, and dynamic warm-ups to prevent injuries.
Mental Conditioning: Visualisation techniques, breathing exercises, and meditation to strengthen focus and manage stress on difficult days.
Tip: For moderate to difficult-level treks, practise exercises with weights. Seek professional advice accordingly.
*Extra Tips related to the diet, muscle recovery, and healthy lifestyle routine

If you cannot find a direct way to Dehradun, then it is advised to book tickets till Delhi. From Delhi, you have all 3 options to reach Dehradun. Reaching by Air is one of them.
As many major cities have direct connectivity to Dehradun, a quick flight is an easy option. The journey begins at 6:30 am from Dehradun. Make sure to book the flight which reaches Dehradun on Day 0 or before 6 am on Day 1.
To reach the central city from Jolly Grant Airport –
- Airport buses that ply between Rishikesh to Dehradun via the airport are also a good option. They generally leave every 1.5 hours.
- Book a taxi from the pre-paid taxi counter at the airport (near the conveyor belt), or get one from outside the airport. They usually charge 1500 but don’t hesitate to bargain.
- Walk for 1.5 km from the airport towards the Dehradun-Rishikesh Highway. From there, catch a private or UTC Bus to ISBT Dehradun for just Rs.40.
Considering the price might lean on the higher side for Dehradun, you can also book a flight to Delhi. From Delhi, train options are best for reaching Dehradun. Otherwise, you can also use the bus or taxi service.
The train offers you a cheaper way to reach your destination with the comfort of long berths to sleep. Depending on your location, book a train directly to Dehradun and reach by Day 0. So you have ample time if the train gets delayed.
You can also book a train ticket for Delhi. For Delhi, you will easily find a train as the capital of the country, the connectivity is vast. Instead of interchanging trains, booking a ticket directly for Delhi is advisable. From here, you can book a taxi or ride by bus to reach Dehradun.

The trek starts from Sankri which is rich of local traditions and cultural. To start with the general attire, the women of Sankri wear their traditional clothes, mostly including a long Kurta with a short choli or coat and a scarf on their heads. They pair it with pyjamas at the bottom. They adorn it with some accessories and a waistband. Like other Himalayan communities, Men of Sankri Village wear the same outfits. They usually wear a dhoti and kurta, and as an overwear, they put on a waistcoat.
You’ll witness even 100-150-year-old houses, and most of them have quite small doors made up of wood. The farmers here usually cultivate Rajma (kidney Beans), Red rice, Potato, and more. Here, women are also employed in subsistence farming; they grow and harvest herbal teas for their home, which would taste different from any ordinary tea. They use the local vegetables grown in their field and sell them in the famous mini market of Sankri. Besides, the shepherds of Sankri Village are also engaged in rearing animals like sheep and goats.
The Himalayas are full of rare species in both flora and fauna; consider yourself lucky if you get to see any special wildlife. Be on alert to identify these plants, animals, birds, etc.
In flora, wildflowers like marsh marigolds and purple poppies are common and in abundance. Apart from these,e dwarf rhododendrons bloom in season, creating a vibrant trail for you.
Some unique plants are a must to know on this trek, like – Setoria Pumila/ Common Weed.
Don’t go for the name and think it is really weed. It is wild grass commonly found on trails. Identify it by dark-coloured stem and hair in shades of white to yellow because they tend to stick to clothes and itch skin.
Another unique plant for us is Amaranth and common for the people of Uttarakhand. This pink-red coloured crop can grow upto 2 meters in height. This crop is cultivated to make flour out of grains and make chapatis or other sweet dishes like “ladoos.”
Though the fauna keeps it to themselves deep in the forest, you may spot langurs, peasants, Himalayan monal, etc, on your trek.
If you happen to witness one, please do not approach them or harm them, slowly start retreating towards your tents and follow the Leave No Trace policy.
