Gaumukh, located in Gangotri National Park, is the birthplace of the Bhagirathi River. To visit the national park, one needs a permit. There are two ways to obtain a Gaumukh Trek Permit: one is through the offline process, and the other is online via the Single Window System.
Note: From September 10 2024 onwards, guide, Gaumukh trek insurance, and a medical certificate are mandatory for both trekkers and guides who wish to do Gaumukh Trek.

Offline Process
Visit the Forest Office in Gangotri and submit your application regarding your visit to Gangotri National Park for Gaumukh Trek. With the application submit Govt ID’s of yourself and other trek participants also. The permit process can take a day or two. Once you have obtained your permit you will need to show it on National Park Check Point.
Gaumukh Permit Online Process
Step 1: Visit SWS and go to the registration tab. All the important fields will show up there.
Step 2: Start by filling in all the details such as date, trek, email address, mobile number, Aadhaar number, etc.
Step 3: Keep documents like Aahdaar Crad, Medical Certificate, and Gaumukh Trek Insurance handy. You will need to upload it there.
Step 4: Upload the affidavit which is to be made on INR 100 Stamp Paper. You can check the format here.
Step 5: In Trek and Agency Details, choose the agency with whom you have agreed for the Permit file process. Every agency has its file charges so contact them before making your permits.
Step 6: In the detailed itinerary section, mention the itinerary that you will follow.
Step 7: Proceed with adding details of all the trek participants and guides.
Step 8: Click and submit your application. The payment page will open where you need to fill in your name, email, and mobile number details. After payment which takes 1-2 minutes to complete your permit will be sent to your email or you can download it with a print option also.
Cost of Gaumukh Permit
Uttarkashi Tourism Department charges INR 205.50 as the Forest Fee and INR 20 as the Tourism Department Processing Fee. So, in total a person needs to pay INR 225.50 on SWS.
For foreign nationals permit charges are different.
If we make your permit, we will charge INR 1,250 as a file permit charge.

- Provide Govt ID of all the participants (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID), Trek Insurance, and Medical

- Make payment via QR code
- We will start the permit process and you will get it within 4-5 days.

Once the permit is ready it will be sent over to you via Email and WhatsApp number.
Important Points to Keep in Mind
- Keep 1-2 buffer days in between your permit process. Sometimes due to Govt Holidays or any other reason it can take some days to get the permit.
- Mention your official name in your application, not the nickname.
- It takes usually 1-2 days to get the permit.
- Keep a check on the weather forecast. If the weather is gloomy or it’s raining, permits won’t be issued.
- Keep enough water and snacks with you before entering the valley.
- Follow the Leave No Trace protocol.
- If you plan to stay in Bhojbasa at GMVN then make your bookings beforehand. Last time bookings are not available.
- Another option to stay at Bhojbasa is Lal Baba Ashram.
- Keep warm clothes with you.
- Drones are not allowed in the National Park.
- If you plan to bring a camera along with you then you may need to pay extra charges
