How to get Mana Pass Permit in 2025 – A Complete Guide

Mana Pass, located in Uttarakhand near the India-China border, is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. Situated within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, it offers a rare blend of extreme altitude, historical significance, and untouched Himalayan beauty making it a dream for adventurers and explorers.

You can also combine the journey with the Badrinath Yatra or as an extension to the Char Dham Yatra. However, reaching Mana Pass isn’t easy, it needs planning with securing permits and arranging logistics.

Here’s a step-by-step guide with everything you need to know about getting the Mana Pass Permit and planning your journey.

Offline Process

Step 1: Collect the Required Documents

Ensure you have these documents:

• Identity Proof: Aadhar Card
• Vehicle Documents: Registration Certificate (RC), insurance, and a valid driver’s license.
• Passport-Sized Photographs: It is recommended to have 2–4 copies.

Step 2: Apply at the SDM Office in Joshimath

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Office in Joshimath processes permit applications. Visit the office in person or work with a registered tour operator to submit your documents. Applications often require a detailed itinerary, including dates, vehicle details, and traveler information.

Step 3: NOC from ITBP and Indian Army

After SDM approval, the applications are sent to the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and the Indian Army camp stationed at the border. Once verified and approved, you can collect your permit from the SDM Office.

Step 4: Processing Time

Permit processing can take 3–7 days, depending on processing delays, seasonal demand and sensitive conditions at the border. It also depends on the availability of the SDM officer. In cases where they are posted on other duties, the process could be delayed.

In February 2025, The Chamoli district administration announced the launch of a dedicated online website, allowing travelers to apply and receive permits online instead of visiting the SDM office in Joshimath for manual approvals.

Step 2: Obtain police verification from the local police station of your place of residence (where you have been residing for the last 6 months) before your journey. Additionally, ensure accommodation arrangements are done in advance, and provide the details.

How to Reach Mana Pass

By Road:

Joshimath is the nearest accessible town to reach Mana Pass. From Joshimath, a 50 km rugged path leads to the Mana Village. From here, you would have to travel in cars or jeeps or bikes to reach Mana Pass which is another 50 km ahead through narrow areas. No public transport is available here, it is recommended to plan your journey accordingly.

By Air:

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. This airport is well connected with flights from major cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai etc. Mana Village is about 315 km from the airport. You could hire a taxi to reach Joshimath, which takes 10-12 hours and continue the journey from there.

By Train:

The nearest railway station is Haridwar Railway Station and Dehradun Railway Station. We advise you to check connections from your cities in advance before planning your journey. After reaching you will have to take the further journey by road as mentioned above.

• Mana Pass is situated at a high altitude of 5500 meters, so please spend time in acclimatization.
