Gangotri National Park opens on April 1 every year. This year with opening up of National Park, people have started asking whether the route to Gaumukh and Tapovan is open or not.

Every year when the National Park opens a team of SDRF, forest officials and local guides go on for a reccy to evaluate the route. After evaluation, a report is sent to DM and then the repair work gets started by local bodies. This whole process takes upto 2-3 weeks and then the route opens up for trekkers and pilgrims.

Usually trek route opens up by mid or end week of April. But this year Himalayas received late snowfall due to weak western disturbances. The months of December and January were dry and snowfall started after the end week of January. Due to late snowfall, snow and glaciers are still on the route.

This month on April 25th a team of SDRF, Forest officials and local trekking associations members did a reccy. They have found glaciers near Bhanglu Basa and Kachi Dhaang. The route is a bit slippery but with proper gears, it can be crossed. Local officials are at repair work and they have stated repair work will be completed within a week. The door of Gangotri Temple will open up on May 10 and with that, the influx of pilgrims and trekkers will begin. That’s why local bodies are trying to get work done before May 10.
